The West Coast - A better place to live simply

There’s nowhere in New Zealand like the West Coast of the Southern Alps.

From spectacular scenery and outdoor opportunities to strong community spirit and an uncluttered, stress-free way of life - it simply is the best place to live and enjoy life.

People

There is no one quite like a Coaster. Perhaps it's the closeness to nature, the tough work in the primary industries or the need for a small population to look after its own - but the Coast has shaped its own unique character. A rugged individual, someone who will give anything a try, who is hospitable, likes to flaunt authority and, above all, knows how to have a good time.

Health

The West Coast is an increasingly important training centre for health professionals hoping to work in rural areas. The region's main health employer is the West Coast District Health Board. Its aim is to become a “Centre of Excellence” for rural health services in New Zealand.

Sport and Recreation

There are heaps of opportunities to compete in and enjoy the outdoors in this region. The most famous of our many endurance events is the Speight’s Coast to Coast held every February. There's also the Buller Marathon, South Westland Triathlon, Brass Monkey Triathlon and the Lake Kaniere Scenic Triathlon.

The inaugural Around Brunner Cycle Race attracted 1,200 cyclists for the 130km route in April 2007. The first Source to Sea Cycle Race last year was also a great success. Social events include the annual A&P shows in each district, the Wet West Film Festival, Westland Golf Classic in January and popular fishing competitions.
