Sport & recreation

Sport plays a major part in the life of many Coasters, with all major sporting codes represented up and down the West Coast.  Rugby league to boxing, board riding to boating, bowls to golf and cricket, and many others are accessible to all age groups. 

Strong community spirit is reinforced through some 200 clubs and recreational interest groups throughout the Coast.  These offer a full calendar of activities to meet the needs of all ages and interest.

Also well established in every locality are service organisations like Lions, Rotary and Lodges, along with Country Women’s’ Institutes, Workingmen’s clubs and Greypower organisations.  Youth groups in Greymouth include The Friday Thing and Junior Teens.  In Hokitika, pre-schoolers are encouraged to make music every Wednesday at Melody Makers.
