Goodbye Sandfly!

Author: West Coast Tourism

Sandflies have been present in New Zealand even longer than the first Maori people. Sandflies are not everywhere on the coast; they concentrate around areas of water and bush.   If you are going to visit these areas, being prepared will make all the difference to your enjoyment.

Sandflies are attracted to skin, particularly ankles and lower legs.   They are also more attracted to dark colours than light colours.  Our recommendation is to cover up with good footwear and trousers.  You may want to choose a repellent to have handy.  NZ sandflies do not carry disease, however, if you do get bitten, use a bite soother and massage the bite instead of scratching.

Thankfully, the sandfly is very slow.  So if you can keep walking at a gentle pace, they will not be able to keep up!
